Pottery & Suzani Intensive: Masters of Clay and Thread

6 days Samarkand

Overview

A 6-day deep dive into Uzbekistan's pottery and embroidery traditions. Learn from 6th-generation potters in Gijduvan, master suzani stitches in Bukhara, explore Samarkand's UNESCO sites. Small groups (max 6).

Two Ancient Crafts, One Transformative Week

If you only have a week to experience Uzbekistan's craft heritage, focus on two of its greatest traditions: the ancient pottery of Gijduvan (unchanged since the 9th century) and the intricate suzani embroidery of Bukhara (keeping family patterns alive for 500+ years).

This 6-day intensive gives you 20+ hours of hands-on workshops with master craftspeople, staying in artisan homes, and exploring the cultural context behind each tradition. You'll create finished pieces to take home and develop skills you can continue practicing.

Why Pottery + Suzani?

Complementary crafts: Pottery is active, physical, and transformative (wet clay becomes ceramic). Suzani is meditative, detailed, and rhythmic (thread becomes art). Together, they show the range of Uzbek craft mastery.

Different time scales: You'll see pottery results in days (throw, glaze, fire). Suzani reveals itself slowly (your panel takes months to finish at home, using skills learned here).

Gendered traditions: Pottery is traditionally male-dominated (father-son workshops). Suzani is women-led (grandmother-granddaughter teaching). You'll experience both cultural perspectives.

What You'll Create

  • Ceramic bowl and plate - Thrown on wheel, glazed with natural ishkor, fired in traditional kiln (take home)
  • Small ceramic tile - Hand-painted with traditional Gijduvan patterns (take home)
  • Suzani embroidery panel (20x20cm) - Learn 6 traditional stitches, start your piece (finish at home with supplied materials)
  • Embroidered bookmark - Complete a small piece during workshops (take home)
  • Craft journal - Document techniques, patterns, and artisan stories

Who This Tour Is For

  • Time-constrained travelers who want deep craft immersion in one week
  • Hands-on learners who prefer doing over sightseeing
  • Textile enthusiasts seeking embroidery mastery
  • Pottery lovers wanting to learn ancient glaze techniques
  • Women travelers (solo or groups) - suzani workshops are women-led and incredibly welcoming
  • Couples seeking creative experiences together
  • First-time Uzbekistan visitors who want craft + iconic sites (Registan, Bukhara Old City)

Workshop Experience

You'll spend intensive days with UNESCO-recognized master artisans, learning techniques passed down through generations. From the potter's wheel in Gijduvan to the embroidery circles of Bukhara, each workshop offers deep immersion into living craft traditions. Your instructors are 5th and 6th generation masters who still use the same methods their ancestors developed centuries ago.

Cultural Immersion

Beyond the workshops, you'll stay with artisan families, share traditional meals, and explore the legendary Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara. Visit the iconic Registan Square at sunset, wander through Bukhara's ancient trading domes, and discover how these crafts shaped Central Asian culture for over a millennium.

Perfect Pairing with Silk to Canvas Tour

Many travelers do this 6-day tour first (pottery + embroidery focus), then return for the 12-day Silk to Canvas journey (all crafts + Savitsky Museum). The skills you learn here deepen your appreciation for the comprehensive tour.

Not sure which tour? Choose this one if: you have limited time (1 week), prefer focused learning over variety, or want a lower price point. Choose Silk to Canvas if: you have 2 weeks, want to see all major crafts, or are making a pilgrimage to Savitsky Museum.
